Here's the difference between us Europeans and the Americans: with the wolf at the door, we retreat upstairs; they come out on the porch to confront it, even if the only thing they could find in the house was a nail-clipper (often, it must be said, it's more like an axe). Yes, this looks like Iraq, with European countries pulling out one after the other - Spain, Italy, and now probably Britain too; while the Americans send in 22,000 more. But that's now the story of climate change too: us Europeans have given in to the idea that the only way out, if there is a way out, is to cut emissions; while the Americans are proposing, or so says the Guardian today, to try and reflect sunlight back into space. Apparently, it would be enough to reflect back into space less than 1% of sunlight to compensate for all the emissions produced since the industrial revolution. We'll leave it to the scientists to tell us whether there is any chance to kill the wolf this way (the new IPCC report comes out next Friday); in the meantime, our preference is clear: get out and fight the wolf, 'cause upstairs there's no freedom.
